JSEC Review Policies

When manuscripts are submitted to the Journal of Social, Evolutionary, and Cultural Psychology, they are first reviewed by the editors to determine if they are ready to be sent for review. If they are not, the editor will ask the author(s) of the manuscript to make the necessary changes, for example, formatting in APA style or cleaning up grammatical errors in the manuscript. After this initial screening, all manuscripts are sent for blind review to two reviewers. In most cases the reviewers are members of the editorial board. In some cases, other experts may be contacted to review. Once the reviews are received, editors make a decision based on the reviewer feedback, and send all comments to the author(s) of the manuscript (with the exception of those outlined in the JSEC Policy on Integrity and Professionalism, below).

JSEC welcomes scholarly interaction in the form of commentaries on target articles. Editors will review commentaries and decide whether or not to publish the commentary. Commentary authors will also be provided with suggested editorial changes. After publication of commentaries, author(s) of the target article will be allowed to publish a response.

JSEC Policy on Integrity and Professionalism

JSEC strives to further scientific understanding of human behavior, while concurrently providing a safe and open environment for scientists. Thus, editors adhere to the following policies regarding professionalism:

  1. The editors have the right to present excerpts of reviews to authors if elements of the reviews are considered inaccurate, poorly conceived, poorly articulated, or unnecessarily hostile.

  2. Criticisms, particularly in the form of commentaries on target articles, are to be presented using wording that is both professional and non-hostile. Critical points need to be presented in a scientific way. If a manuscript of commentary is submitted that does not adhere to this policy, editors will ask the author(s) to revise.
